Dungeon Defenders is a tower-defence meets action RPG game. You have all the flavours of a tower defence game combined with hero classes experience and unique abilities. Dungeon Defenders 2 had a nice reception and is even free to play across Xbox PC and ps4 following the strong community response with its release in June of 2017 chromatic games launched a Kickstarter for Dungeon Defenders awakened. Which was a massive success raising over $450,000 while above their goal of 250,000 you'll start the game off with a cute comic book-like cutscene that gives a quick overview of the world its characters and a brief history of the events that happened before the third game. The story is fun light-hearted and gives you reasons to beat our defending. the visual design of the game reminds me a lot of Warcraft, giving a fun and whimsical look to just about everything from the monsters, towers and environments this visual design looks great and Unreal Engine and it fits the theme well. When you first enter the world of Dungeon Defenders awakened you'll be put into a tutorial mode that will teach you the basic mechanics and if you're familiar with tower defence games in general you'll feel right at home here. The tutorial explains how enemies spawn the paths in they take and how to defend your Eternia crystal core from the orcs and goblins trying to destroy it. dungeon defender awakens gameplay is split into two phases, build phase and combat phase build phase is where you place and choose towers to defend your core by spending green mana there are multiple types of towers defensive, offensive and each have unique properties ranges and a cost to construct.
You build in place these towers via the current hero you control. At the time of our playthrough there were currently only four heroes. You can switch between these heroes in real time during your build phase and each can construct unique towers. For example, the Prentis can make flame and magic missile towers to damage enemies. While the mark can place for us that can heal players slow enemies or deal electrical damage. The squire can build barricades to slow down the line of incoming enemies and the Huntress can place traps that have a set number of charges to poison or explode goblins. This itself is the core gameplay finding out which towers synergize with one another is pivotal to your success. Once your plan has been formed you can then enter combat phase. Once in combat phase you are stuck with whatever here are you selected for the remainder of the enemy wave. You use this hero to attack the hordes directly, using the heroes unique attack abilities to help you defend the core. This is where the game separates itself from the classic tower defence genre and becomes a third-person action RPG. Slashing and shooting your way through big waves of monsters.
Each of your heroes can gain experience points and level up. Each time you level up you're given a rune points to put into things, like an individual heroes health damage and armour as well as their specific towers to increase their fire rate or their range. This is where the game gets really addicting, as the constant scaling of harder modes and enemies will always reward you with more room points to spend until your towers have a crazy range and your heroes do insane amounts of damage. Combine this with a gear and accessories loot system that drops up as you play that you can equip to each hero. Each one of these equipment slots has different effects and stats on your weapon, armor or what not even on an accessory like your pet with all this going on you could easily spend hours in Dungeon Defenders a weekend. That said unless you're already familiar with the franchise, the game doesn't do a very good job at explaining things or walking the players through unique features. For example, you can sell unwanted gear to get gold coins you can use these gold coins to upgrade gear either I miss this in the tutorial mode or it was unclear in the game itself. Stuff like this really needs to be presented more forwardly. So I don't have to reach out to discord in order to understand the game's mechanics.
A lot of the game is figuring out fun combos and builds for yourself, but it would be nice if the game could at least expand and explain the types of damage and how they work with each other a little bit better. The UI is also a bit intimidating there are lots of numbers and modifier stats thrown at you and it's really hard to make heads or tails of them without going to an outside source like a form or discord for help. Dungeon Defenders awaken features a multitude of modes including survival, challenge and a decent lengthy campaign with an amazing amount of map variety. In fact most of the maps environments are incredibly diverse and super fun to look at. It really brings the fun fantasy genre of the game to life. Offcourse Dungeon Defenders awakens supports online play in the form of public or private sessions, for any of the game's core modes and you can have up to 4 players in these sessions. It’s relatively easy to start a game select a difficulty and invite friends, which is always a plus. Unlike Dungeon Defenders 2 Dungeon Defenders awaken has some huge differences, first and foremost the game is a full retail experience which means it will not be free-to-play. This is a pretty major change and the barrier for entry is now $29.99.
This change however I feel is a good one as it's free-to-play predecessor Dungeon Defenders 2 had a lot of things going on in terms of resources, currencies and storage micro transactions. Which could get a bit overwhelming at times. Dungeon Defenders awaken is a fun game with hundreds of hours of gameplay waiting to be had that said this is a tower defence game at its core. so we can get repetitive for certain gamers that don't care for the genre and newcomers to the series, may take a bit to get acclimated to the game's mechanics and although the game does have controller support none of the UI reflects the button inputs on the controller itself on screen. It just shows the keyboard inputs don't let all this get you down though I enjoyed the time I spent in Dungeon Defenders awakened. It was a very enjoyable experience and fun to play. In fact once you get the hang of it you'll spend hours lost in working out strategies and bills to test to eliminate hordes of goblins and orcs. If you love the Dungeon Defenders series you'll no doubt want to pick this up if you haven't already. If you're a fan of tower defence this is a must-have but if you're new to the franchise in general the game can be a tad intimidating. So it will take you a bit to get into the swing of things.
