Description :
It's a proof to the breath of Quantic Dream's branching storylines that I felt badly guilty as the credits rolled after my second playthrough of Detroit become human. Detroit obliged my newfound wickedness to a surprising degree leaving a trail of bodies of those who had previously survived in my wake. Although, it never seemed to know when heavy-handed expositional dialogue is enough. Detroit become human manages to be a frequently moving melodrama that bends to your choices with the meaningful results.
Each of my playthroughs took around 10 hours to complete and during that time Detroit's pace rarely lags but thanks to the DIF juggling active performs alternating between three excellent Android characters. Brian de chant is delightful as Connor thanks to his deadpan. Valerie curry brings quiet strength to Cara and excels at selling her love for her Ward Ellis who is quite possibly the least charismatic videogame child to have ever existed. How could you do that I trusted you Jesse Williams employs all of his dreamy Grey's Anatomy waltzes Marcus and despite the interesting moral tug-of-war within him is never unlikable no matter how you choose to play him. Their faces are all rendered with an astounding level of detail especially on the PlayStation 4 pros based on your choices though you can change their personalities and a tone of their individual stories. Play Connor is attentive and humble you have a dog right you might experience a knock about buddy comedy play him as ambitious and that's an entirely different story. Keira story seems less totally flexible but is the quietest and most intimate which is a welcome contrast to all the running and explosions you can opt into in the other two stories. Putting any of them in compromising situations or worse sending them to their death was a fear throughout it's a testament to the writing and performances that I found making decisions just to see what would happen teeth clankingly hard. For the foremost part side-characters adapt to the way you select to play but there is some story like misfires.
It’s observable when your choices feel they go against the grain of a more robust story. The backbone of Detroit story meaning the one that's relatively fixed in place despite the choices you make around it is big ambitious fun even if it suffers from a multitude of plot holes that are obvious in hindsight. But look these weren't deal-breakers for me because while Detroit is audacious and silly as hell it's got a real heart to it and there were enough moments of quiet tenderness that kept me emotionally invested until the thrilling high stakes of the final act with this in mind there is a lot of clumsy exposition and dialogue I was willing to forgive that's one word while watching a fun b-movie. But occasionally Detroit ignores the standard writing rule of sure don't tell to such an extent that I was yanked out of the story. The world here feels very real too built with a sense of history this is a miserable dark version of a future Detroit where androids are so ubiquitous that they're old news and little details tell the story of a burst tech bubble though the path you were guided through is as linear as previous Quantic Dream games enjoyed the luxury of more time to linger and prod around in its beautifully detailed environments. The way you interact with the world around you hasn't really evolved much from Quantic Dream's usual timed button press formula. Which is untrue Civ and mostly works.
A new Android Detective Mode allows you to scan your environment to reconstruct crime scenes and fast footing and rewinding through these is a lot of fun as there is a new cool ability to re-construct scene before you execute them. Like beyond two souls before it though Detroit become human it struggles to justify its multiple fight scenes with meaningful interactivity. Why make them interactive at all if you have to try so hard to fail of course the way you play Detroit is primarily through the choices you make within it. Well, there's still that immovable backbone of a story I found it's branching cards to be multiple and deep. Quantic Dream was smart in showing these paths transparent with the help of a flowchart displayed at the end of each chapter telling you just how differently it could have played out. Comparing endings not only between my first and second play-through but with other players revealed some shocking differences. One play-through isn't enough to see what Detroit become humans deceptively complex scenarios have to offer and its characters and world building are interesting enough that it was a pleasure to go back to see what I've missed the first time. But I wish its story had been handled with a softer touch it's well written and acted central trio with vital enough to me that I felt genuine distress when they were in danger and a sense of victory when they triumphed particularly when my choices had such a permanence that raised the stakes throughout.
