Description :
Sky Hill black mist is the second title in the sky Hill series from indie developer’s mandragora Studios. I was personally really excited to play this as a fan of the original sky hill from 2015. I waited all day and I literally received the email from Steam maybe a minute or two into the ps5 reveal stream so needless to say it was a double dose of gaming joy. What really intrigued me about sky hill black mist was seeing how the developers would transition from the original point-and-click system that worked really well into a semi-open world with an isometric top-down view. The game trailer set the tone for a creepy mysterious experience that is survival at all cost. But is the game any good let's jump in
In sky Hill black mist you play as Harry Thompson a military veteran who just moved into a luxury condominium complex. Owned by biotech Corporation sky Hill Incorporated. You work for sky hook Incorporated but something just isn't right. You find that your daughter has been kidnapped and there are monsters on cult members everywhere. To make matters worse you’re infected by the black mist and you are slowly dying. To outlive this nightmare you must find medicine gathering craft resources such as tools and weapons to survive. You head out on your quest for answers and you head out on a quest to find your kidnapped daughter. oh did I mention you're stuck in a time loop and then there's that creepy guy in the lobby but I'll let you draw your own conclusions. the first thing you see with any new game is its presentation and while cartooning in its own right sky Hale sets a pretty mysterious tone from the opening menu screen. Cut scenes unfold like a dark comic book and as the game progresses it creates tense moments between you and the monsters by forcing you to make choices that you may not want to make.
What’s great is that the game doesn’t hold your hands. There will be times where you have to figure out things on your own which I really enjoy. The monsters are plenty you have your general monsters your mid-level monsters and then you have your big brute monsters. With a little practice you can learn how to deal with them rather easily by not touching them at all. Fans of the original game will be happy to know that the core mechanics are still intact. you will receive phone calls and texts from your daughter in distress, you will search rooms for items to assist in your progression, you will find those passive skills around the various areas that you search from food to weapons to crafting materials and yes fuses for those gosh-darn fuse boxes are there as well. Oh and don't forget about the elevator key cards. Sky Hill stays true to its original formula while also putting more choice in the hands of the player with its semi open environment. When you explore make sure you check everything because the game doesn't provide you with every searchable case or bag like the original game did. You can easily overlook something if you aren't careful and if you are a player that likes to go into a game gun blazing this is not the game for you. Ammo - please fast heck your general weapons deplete fast if you aren't careful. One sip I will share is to really think about which enemies you need to use your weapons on. Learn how to crouch and learn how to sneak around. The controls are very very easy to pick up I decided to play on my Xbox one elite controller and it felt great. There aren't any difficult button sequences and it really wouldn't feel like a sky hill title if there were.
Let’s focus on some areas for improvement the game definitely needs a patch because it’s frozen multiple times during my game play. To add to that enemies tend to disappear here and there and you can’t see where they are you just see question marks above their heads. sometimes those question marks pop up and there are no enemies there at all and often times you’re unable to see the view range of the ranged monsters that you have to maneuver around and you walk right into their path and that's forces you to have to use your weapons a waste ammo and/or run and then there's the frame issues and clipping in certain areas. Gameplay aside I also found that the inventory menu can be a bit confusing for me as a player. the color of the menu screen and the items are all one color they're all gray every item is the same color which kind of makes everything just run together and I'm sure that was done to match the tone of the game but it makes the items in the inventory screen look bland. Maybe some colors would have helped things pop and sort easier at the end of my seven-hour experience I left the game unfinished due to the freezing issues. I do plan to finish the game although I think I’ll wait for a patch to do so but all things considered. I think the game is solid and while it isn't amazing there is some fun to be had here with a patch I would consider this game certified but in its current state I would have to say think twice. I do want to give a big thank you to the developers for providing me with a review copy for the game I've really enjoyed what I've seen so far when the game is working. I do plan to finish the game very very soon.
