Robots blasting and bashing each other to bits as a concept near and dear to my heart and on that level disintegration single-player campaign delivers. Its creative approach the first-person shooting is also intriguing since it has you floating above the action and calling the shots for a team of bots on the ground while you're firing away. But it's not as smart as it looks and what seemed like it could get interesting and tactical never really did. Disintegrations 15 hour campaign doesn't do a great job of setting up the conflict between the evil red-eyed robots and the good blue eyed rebels. But most of that history in the end comes out in between all missions dialogues with your co hearts. Most of them have been integrated which is the technology of transferring a human consciousness into a robot body. As former celebrity pilot Romer shoal you lead your team in a series of missions to take down the enemy's massive Flying Fortress. The voice-acting does lend these bots some good diverse personalities and that gives the stories offense a little bit of weight at least. Disintegration isn't the prettiest of games but it does have some good diversity to its settings. Visually at least no two are alike; mission design on the other hand leans heavily on throwing wave after wave of the same handful of enemies at you as you move through linear gauntlet. blasting them like star wars battle droids is a fair amount of fun for a while not because their AI is especially good or anything but because rather than literally disintegrating they explode into chunks in a satisfying way that's one thing disintegration does better than most games. Your guns will tear apart the environment in a pretty dramatic fashion reducing wood to splinters and even shattering concrete barriers that enemies were using as cover. It’s that red faction or anything but it definitely makes the weapons and explosions feel powerful and look cool.

But combat gets stale pretty quickly because even though it's a squad based game where you get a bird's-eye view of the battlefield. Disintegration isn't tactical at all where something like Mass Effect allows you to tell each unit where to go and what abilities to use when they get there. This is more like directing a mob, you can't tell your Iron Giant style Hulk buddy to play Rock'em Sock'em robots with the big guys while the more agile soldiers take on the fodder because there's only one everybody attacked this target or open that box button and they all act as one. It’s very simple you do get to direct your squad members to individually use their special abilities like grenades and ground pounds and they can be used as combos for extra damage. But they're not interesting to use because positioning doesn't matter much so it's just a matter of waiting for the cooldowns and then casting them again. You have to keep your team alive to use them though and also so they can absorb all the enemy fire that your fragile flying motorcycle can't depending on what gear you're given for a mission that can be tricky to do like if you don't have any healing abilities and have to rely on pickups but of course if one does go down all you have to do is retrieve their head and they'll rock it back onto the field a few seconds later in a shiny new body. So you don't need to sweat it much if they explode.

Then there are the boss battles which look and sound great but are usually pretty weak they boil down to shooting it until it goes down then getting right up in its armpit and hovering there holding down the fire button until it explodes. It only got a little challenging when I had to deal with two at once.

What’s especially frustrating is that you have zero control over your squad composition or your vehicle's loadout. Every mission just hands it all to you and all you get to do is pump in a few upgrade points for stat boosts. I get that I'm being walked through different roles I'll need to know for multiplayer like the healer and the sniper but it's a bit annoying to have things like how you heal yourself change from level to level and not be able to pick a favorite gunner robot and develop it. That lack of continuity made levels feel like a string of unrelated battles and it practically kills replay ability. The game has no customization which feels like a very poor design choice.

Flying around and giving orders to cool-looking robots is a neat concept but the simple shooting and squad management of disintegration single-player campaign make it fall pretty flat after a while. the surprising lack of customization and progression make the battles feel disconnected outside of the story which has some decent characters but is otherwise a pretty straightforward rebellion against evil robot overlords.

In an era where more first shooters seem to be intent on constantly upping the tempo, Metro Exodus is refreshing in its demand that you take your time. This is not a run and gun experience. It's a stay low and go slow crawl through some of the most atmospheric and detailed rich settings I've ever experienced in a story driven shooter. With a story-line that sidesteps the supernatural themes of its predeceases in favor of focusing on a more effecting human experience, and level design that affords you significantly more freedom without ever giving you too much room to relax. Metro Exodus feels like the full realization of this franchise's potentiation.

Picking up two years after the events of Metro Last Light, the largely self-contained story of Metro Exodus follows the plot of main protagonist Artyom, his wife Anna, and a crew of surviving Spartan rangers as they set out from nuclear war ravaged Moscow in search of safe harbor aboard the train Aurora. That mobility brings a dazzling variety of settings we've never seen in a Metro game. Taken you from snow blanketed sprawls of urban decay to sand swept deserts, and lush forest settings. Each populated by a healthy variety of deadly mutants and pockets of humanity both friendly and hostile. These levels are also far more open than what we've come to expect from the previous two Metro games. But that's not to say you won't spend a considerable amount of time exploring the traditional, dank underground corridors. Many story objectives still require you to descend into the sorts of dread filled subterranean that the Metro series was built upon. And thanks to a generational jump in lighting effects and high quality ambient audio. They feel more ominous and claustrophobic than ever. Up on the surface, the larger sand box style levels relax the leash and let you sniff around with more freedom. Stealthing your way through enemy camps and abandoned houses that can be scouted for precious resources. But even when you're out in the open, Metro Exodus finds ways of keeping your anxiety levels in the red by obscuring your surroundings with intermittent sand storms in the Caspian desert level or introducing packs of snarling dogs in a forest valley section that can attack from any direction and have you frantically scrambling for higher ground. With factors like these in play, Metro Exodus successfully manages to put you in wide open spaces without ever giving you too much room to breathe.

Metro Exodus does away with the ammunition basic currency system and weapons merchants from its predeceases in favor of work benches and a backpack that can be used to craft certain items on the fly. I found the backpack to be an invaluable addition to the Metro Exodus experience. Particularly since it also brings with it the ability to swap out weapon parts without returning to a base. Allowing you to tweak your arsenal to suit each enemy encounter. Human enemies seem noticeably smarter in Metro Exodus. Communicating with each other during a fire fight and intelligently moving around to flank. But it's the scraps with mutants that provide the stiffest combat challenge. The gun play is nice and crunchy and there's a broad range of mutant enemy types to tackle. From the humanimals, that camouflage themselves in the desert surroundings and surprise you at the last minute, (gun fires) to the light fearing spider creatures that must be weakened with a beam of your torch light before you can finish them off. Each mutant type requires its own unique strategy to overcome which means combat in Metro Exodus rarely becomes mired in repetition.

Since so much of your time in Metro Exodus is spent on tents and lonely excursions away from the Aurora, the playable tenents aboard the traveling train that book end the main levels give you an opportunity to relax and bond with the rest of the characters. I relished the chance to get to know the crew a little better as the journey went on and I became more invested in their individual plots as a result. Even despite the inconsistent quality of the voice acting. I also enjoyed pulling on the train whistle to literally let off steam. Perhaps I enjoyed it a little too much. While bonding with these characters ensures that the plot delivers an emotional pay off, the lack of any main antagonist in Metro Exodus means there's no climatic showdown to speak of at the story's end. After surging forward with slow paced, yet sustained momentum for the bulk of its 20 hour run time, Metro Exodus ultimately grinds to a halt as opposed to going out with a bang. I was compelled towards its conclusion by the strength of its story and I was ultimately satisfied with how it resolved but I can't help but feel that the most exciting moments of Metro Exodus are scented around its middle act.

Metro Exodus takes the fear inducing formula of the series and transplants it into expansive, sand box like levels without losing any of the oppressive tension that makes the franchise memorable and distinctive among post-apocalyptic first person shooters. It's a frequently exhilarating and densely atmospheric journey across a Russian dystopia brimming with detail and deadly inhabitants. And well worth the trip for its consistently effective use of survival horror and hair raising action.

But those concepts have been expanded upon here whose slick text displays where many of the objectives are tackled. While the plot is intriguing and it drives oscillation along a good pace as plenty of calm amid the chaos. You’re encouraged to explore each of the station's former inhabitant’s living spaces to find out more about them in their lives leading to quite months of smaller-scale drama. Each of these intertwining personal stories and relationships layer on top of each other to help build atmosphere. Which is something observation offers in abundance.

The snaking corridors addressed in glistening metal and glossy plastics. Design some blueprints of the International Space Station currently orbiting our earth have been pored over in the creation of the observation and it really shows. the cast of characters our voice solidly as a whole but the leads are truly the standouts. Kezia burrows believable and emotive performances Emma Fisher contrasts beautifully with the voice of San. Anthony house performance is deeply and purposefully reminiscent of 2001’s how .One area of presentation it doesn't quite match up to the standard fidelity observation says elsewhere is the human character modeling. Lip synching isn't quite up to scratch and looking into dr. fish's eyes occasionally feels like staring into a black hole. It’s a shame the fear and desperation so often conveyed in her dialogue a rarely if ever displayed on her face. There is a variety of Observation tools to your discard from dozens of CCTV light cameras located around each of the stations many modules to the more liberating drones fierce and can possess. These enable you to explore more freely even outside of the ship and to flow around its expansive exterior. The space station is an overwhelming beast at first especially when it first opens up after this tutorial. But it soon becomes familiar and I found I wasn't relying on the map as so I progressed through the six-hour campaign. While the scope of boundless space come up with its backdrop. The focus of observations puzzles is relatively small in scale but they are nevertheless engaging.

It brilliantly succeeds at more than what could easily be dull scientifically grounded tasks into pleasing puzzles. Although if you present much of a challenge they're undoubtedly effective at making you feel participant in the story as opposed to an onlooker. Think of it more like building some piece of furniture as against to completing a crossword. A minor gripe is the complexity of puzzles never really scaled with the heightened states of the story as it progresses towards its conclusion. I never really got stuck on a puzzle for any length of time and it's a little underwhelming to find yourself two impulses at the end that are so similar to what you did all the start. This isn't necessarily to the detriment of observation overall though as it is the compelling storytelling that ultimately shines through. Numerous high concept  sci-fi stories stumble trying to supply a satisfying ending to an ever-changing plot. While some fault no codes previous Alton's stories untold suffer from a rather heavy-handed conclusion observations ending is elegant. The last 20 minutes bring together everything you've seen and learned in an emotionally grounded visually spectacular finale.

Observation could be a smart original sci-fi story propelled by its novel approach to puzzle design and stunning attention to detail. So often an experience like this will struggle to seek out the balance between challenging gameplay and a captivating story. The Observation doesn't suffer from this and the compelling ploy is never halted by frustratingly obtuse conundrums. it simply doesn't deal in obfuscation instead it's beautifully signposted about feeling clumsy driving you through its labyrinth of hallways and a story that grips from start to finish. All of these components come together to create a chilling high-concept tale that nails the landing and fully achieve what it sets out to accomplish.

My Reviews :

The driving iconic score that welcomes you to prototyping grounds is one that instantly sparks nostalgia into anyone familiar with the cold 1987 movie. unfortunately very little else of what made the arnold schwarzenegger versus alien monster bullet fest so much fun has made it into alphonic's latest 80s adaptation. There are brief bursts of frantic action lurking in the undergrowth which when combined with tense firefights create blockbuster moments synonymous with the source material. These moments are all too infrequent however, as hunting grounds often underwhelms more than the excites. Before dropping in for your daily dose of asymmetric action you'll have one crucial decision to make play as one of four fire team members as you infiltrate an area of non-descript south american jungle and attempt to complete a series of objectives in an exfiltrate before the 15 minute timer runs down or choose the predator life as you hunt down the fire team and try to pick them off one by one distract them from their mission and be an all-round nuisance.

It seems like the latter should be the far more appealing option even if the relatively long matchmaking times that come with it are not but it's actually as a fire team member that i've found the majority of my enjoyment in hunting grounds. There’s a variety of missions that you'll be randomly assigned when landing in one of the three maps currently available. each is essentially the same package wrapped in different paper however and almost entirely consists of going to a marked area on the map holding down the square button and dealing with few ai-controlled guerrilla fighters before moving on to the next. These fighters aren't the sharpest blades of grass in the jungle though and will consistently funnel down the same few corridors waiting to be greeted by gunfire. The shooting itself feels adequate not operating on the same plane as an apex legend or call of duty. But serviceable and at no point gave me reason to want to stop playing. there's a small selection of weapons to choose from each more than effective against the ai especially the default shotgun which counts as a secondary weapon and appears able to one shot every grunt at a frankly absurd range as a result of those factors these firefights offer little to no challenge and quickly become repetitive as you gain knowledge of the enemy's spawn positions.

When the pv becomes pvpv is where a lot of the enjoyment can be found in hunting grounds. When all of the elements of the hunt come together high action moments are created and the appealing core idea of hunting ground shines through. Especially in the final phase after all mission objectives have been completed and you inevitably need to get to the chopper. The stakes are heightened as she has to defend your location from both militia and the predator. Who has to abandon all subtlety and go all out at this stage to prevent you from escaping. for all of this to come together just right largely relies on the ability level of the player controlling predator and that's exacerbated by the disappointingly unbalanced nature of hunting grounds too often the hunted become the hunters and what should be a tense fearful encounter for the fire team descent into a game of cat and mouse. Where the mouse can just turn around and unload a full clip of ammunition into their pursuer. The predator can easily be defeated by the fire team as long as they stick together because the stealthy alien has very little answer to four guns being pointed at him.

A more tactically thought out plan of attack sounds so much more interesting than successfully going toe-to-toe the creature that you have no business matching up against. Defeating the predator should be the pinnacle of the experience but it happens far too often and offers little satisfaction once the predator is down three different scenarios can play out each underwhelming to varying degrees. First if you get enough damaging quickly then you can finish the monster off for good and call into hq for the body to be collected once this happens you'll have to keep the body in pristine condition while defending it from a slightly increased but still impotent number of ai forces. If you don't finish off the predator though he'll just have enough time to set off his iconic self-destruct mini muke. This is the much more interesting option that provides a few seconds of tense decision making you can either run and try and escape the blast radius or if you're feeling brave you can try to defuse the bomb by completing a series of four puzzles against the clock. The witness this is not but the mini-game does provide a brief period of fear and excitement.

I wish there was so much more of in hunting grounds meanwhile playing as the predator should feel like a power trip. but hunting grounds fall short in this regard some elements of his skill set do feel great to wield and leaping purposely through treetops or pred core if you will feels fluid for the first few hours of playing your arsenal will be limited to pretty much the basics. But more exciting options do begin to open up the further you progress. when at close quarters it takes several imprecise melee attacks with your sharpened claws in order to take down a fire team member by which time you'll be lucky to have not had a good chunk of your health bar taken away from this point on the tables are often turned and the predator becomes the prey after your first engagement. Even when using your cloaking device it's fairly easy to get spotted in the trees while retreating and before you've had time to claim your kill the fire team have already revived their squad mate. It’s a fairly unsatisfying kind of encounter that needs balancing out in the near future. Whether that's by increasing the predator's damage output or his resistance to gunfire.

The look of the predator and in particular the sound design is spot on through and when combined with the movie's pulsating score evokes a big hit of nostalgia. It’s disappointing that the same care hasn't gone into the fire team. Who are just the selections of generic male and female character models that can be minorly customized. There are a couple of little nods to the original movie and the unlockable cosmetics. But it would have been nice to see more for fans of the series. predator hunting grounds doesn't quite let you live out that power fantasy of being an extraterrestrial master hunter nor does it provide top-tier co-op fps gun play. Brief moments playing on either side of the battlefield create genuinely exciting action scenes. But they're all too infrequent and end far too abruptly when you find them. Because the predator is too often outgunned and has few means of dividing and conquering his prey. There’s a consistently enjoyable experience buried somewhere in the janky jungle of predator hunting grounds but it's just not that easy to find yet.

Originally titled kill X immortal legacy the Jade cipher looks to want to be the Uncharted of psvr. But does this Sony publish title pull it off let's find out. Published by Sony themselves and in development for almost three years immortal legacy the Jade cipher is it most times actually pretty stunning in the headset the earlier stages with wide open spaces of cliff walls and great elevation are delivered with long draw distances and very sharp textures with no mention of a pro patch these opening stages are easily on par with the likes of evasion and even tomorrow when comparing sharpness and draw distance.

Even more impressive is that even with these open spaces the game pulls off some excellent ambient occlusion lighting effects. In addition to some impressive particle effects with the hurricane-like winds being a real standout. Later stages cease spending most of your time in the dark and sinister feeling cave systems. It is here that the games letting engine really shines as you are often draped in darkness with only your flashlight and guns for company. Shadows stretched across entire spaces while you Trek further and further into the nether of the island secrets and never failed to impress me with what Viva Games had managed to pull off on the dated ps4 hardware. Weapon models are also fantastically modeled and their real-life counterparts. they aren't fully animated but visually come off even more impressive than the gun models found in firewalls zero-hour with overall sharper visuals free of much of the blurriness that plagues similar games. Unfortunately it's not all good news while impressive and overall scope level textures are at times underwhelming or too obviously cherry-picked. exampled well when looking at lower rock faces with increased detail yet having areas right above them coming off significantly under develop.

While concessions obviously needed to be made given the games ambitions it was still noticeable. Character animations will not cringe worthy are also not first-rate and do stand out as a sore spot when seen in comparison to the games other visual high points. in addition lip sync is way out but that's to be expected given the Asian based development and speaking of character animations I am a huge fan of having a rendered body and VR but what is it with the arms seemingly coming out of my neck this was obviously a result of the developer not rendering the rest of the body including the shoulders but I honestly might have preferred the floating hands situation instead. All in all not triple-a VR visuals but still a significant achievement and a nice surprise we didn't see coming. Sound is up next. Small indie and specifically Asian based studios have not had the best track record when it comes to the audio side of their psvr offerings often the result has been cheesy music cringe-worthy dialogue and generic sound effects well wasn't I surprised when jumping into a mortal legacy only be greeted by a competent orchestral score with some nice tribal undertones decent sounding weapons and the lead character voiced by none other than famed voice actor Doug cockle.

You may not know that name but you know the voice with his Solid Snake s portrayal of Geralt from The Witcher series. Voice acting is across the board fairly competent but having your inner monologue come across from this pedigree of voice actor is not something we're used to hearing in VR games that just randomly hit the PSN store. Like I said weapon sounds are actually very decent some fare better than others and they certainly aren't first-rate but they did sound relatively authentic and helped make gun play a satisfying part of the game. World sounds are also handled with a fairly high level of competence nicely checking off all the boxes of required effects. Nothing here stands out as incredible but then nothing jumps out as horrible either. it's all just okay the 3d sound mix can be a little spotty at times with certain environmental effects notice Lee jumping from one ear to the other but then in the next moment incredibly effective like the visuals a bit of a mixed bag here but overall a lot more done right than not and that brings us to gameplay well let's get this out of the way regardless of the positives and negatives I will soon get into here a mortal legacy the Jade cipher is probably the closest thing this generation of PSVR hardware will get to an uncharted game the gunplay throat mountaintop locales against hired guns check, ancient puzzles to solve check, rock-climbing check, to exploration rare magical artifact check, check, check in fact the only thing we are missing is Nolan North to bring the comedic dialogue.

Now I'm not saying this is nearly on par with the quality of the Uncharted series but it's hard not to see and at times appreciate the similarities. At around five hours in length the campaign is split into two primary parts that of the wide open vistas of the mountain passes and the dark and ominous cave sections. Your first third will be spent topside and is primarily all about gunplay against a bunch of mercs with a little bit of rock climbing thrown in for good measure. An epic boss fight Resident Evil style and then below you go for the remainder of the game. Once in the case system things get a bit more varied as we see the introduction of some light puzzle mechanics and a quick change of direction from gun-toting mercs to the more of the monster variety. As you will now spend most of your time also battling the dark and the creepiness of what you can't see coming not helped by the introduction of branching paths and dead ends the latter of which could be very frustrating at times due to the very slow movement speed. I can't say that I cared at all about the story and all these gameplay elements didn't always come together as well as I would have hoped. But I can honestly say I was never bored and that brings me to my one giant complaint and the area of which the game really drops the ball in. The controls with mandatory move controls the devs seem determined to deliver dual wielding gameplay on psvr regardless of what compromises needed to be made.

I can see what they're going for I really can attempting to make it so we didn't have to wave one move around to strafe and walk backwards instead allowing us to move and still shoot with both hands freely the result is a very unintuitive control scheme that has left and right split across two moves walk and run being done by pushing either one or both move buttons walking backwards and strafing are put to the face buttons and inventory control for each hand is done by a single button the scrolls through everything in that hands limited inventory and while I did slowly get accustomed to it and I did enjoy being able to strafe with both hands firing the ends do not justify the means. The end result was switching guns trying to turn an inventory system that made it so I had to scroll through multiple items just to heal, an awkward backward motion the inability to run and turn at the same time, and just a general awkwardness to all things related to movement in gun-play other poor control choices like the inability to just holster a single weapon, key artifacts, taking up inventory slots for the whole game, and the frustratingly slow movement speed made playing immortal legacy much more of a chore than it needed to be. When in gun-play the dumb AI and poor control options often ended with me just standing the open making sure I killed them first as moving to cover was just too painful. We all know the struggle of full movement games with the stick list moves but sticking to the psvr standard most games have adopted or at least giving us the option to switch to it would have been far wiser. In fact it's a testament to the things the game does right that despite all these control issues I still had fun however one unique control choice did get a thumbs up.

When using two-handed rifles you are required to grab the gun with both moves but then can drop one hand to free it up. This broke the immersion of holding a gun slightly but added the benefit of allowing me to free up a hand as well as to avoid in tracking issues of having two moves close together and in line with each other often resulting in a bad time in PSVR land. Looking on the brighter side of things gun-play was still pretty fun and I enjoyed the wide variety of guns sights worked well across the board and while dual wielding is rarely not fun. Comparisons to Killing Floor incursion and Arizona sunshine are obvious here and fairly so. Arizona with its aim support is the better playing of the tube but campaign versus campaign and overall quality immortal legacy comes off a head. when looking at Killing Floor another game I loved but had issues with I have to say they are about even with an even amount of pros and cons. immortal legacy as I previously mentioned is controlled by two moves only aim sport would of course been awesome and honestly a surprising absence considering Sony is the publisher of this game.

That being said the game's development was started far before the aim was a thing and perhaps forgoing all the two-handed aspects was simply not feasible. Instead I'm looking at the upcoming 3d rudder which would be a perfect fit to take overall movement controls drastically increasing the game's fun factor. immortal legacy does support click turning and smooth turning but be warned the smooth turn here is horribly implemented with strong baked-in blinders and a noticeable drop in frames. I'm not a fan of click turning but trust me when I say it's the better choice. Motion sickness could be an issue for some as there's no teleport option however the walking speed is rather slow so it could be manageable. Immortal legacy can be played either sitting or standing with a modern amount of room recommended and finally that brings us to fun factor and my final review. Immortal legacy the Jade cipher is a frustrating title due largely in part that it does so much right yet really shits the bed on the control side of things dampening the overall experience. That being said despite its issues I still really enjoyed it due largely in part to the adventure that I felt I was on and the fantastic VR visuals. as you know I hate number rating scales and instead write games on the basis of by weight for sale or burn it to the ground at $20 u.s. this game is priced probably just right and ensures you will get your money's worth that being said if you aren't willing to work with the controls and just deal this is not the game for you. For those that really enjoyed killing floor incursion despite the busyness of those controls I think this is an absolute must buy for you. This doesn't have that game's co-op and its controls aren't the same but if that's the type of game you like in VR then you've also been waiting a long time for another one like it and this will make you smile.

My Reviews :

When you build up expectations so high for a game and then you're finally at long last able to play it chances are you're bound to be disappointed to some degree or another. Maybe the story didn't turn out the way you wanted or the controls just didn't come together. But for whatever reason the game that you hope to play just wasn't the one that was delivered. So after a year of building excitement for the persistence calling it over and over my most anticipated PlayStation VR game. I knew that I could be setting myself up for a major letdown. So no one is happier than I am to tell you that not only did developer fire sprite deliver on all of my expectations. But the longer I played the more I realized they actually exceeded every single one.

The Persistence initially looks like a first-person shooter set in space. But on further investigation it's clear that this is far more similar to a vast array of rogue lights that strangely 2d cartoons side-scroller rogue legacy being the closest analog. There are a ton of experimental items weapons grenades and yes even guns to find unlock upgrade and craft to help you on your mission all of which simply disappear every single time you die requiring you to restart the level basically from scratch. The biggest exception to that rule is your permanent stat upgrades that are purchased with stem cells that are scattered around the ship or harvested from enemies.

Occasionally you'll encounter of rare schematics that once you construct them act like perks. If that being said even the best weapons and the strongest perks aren't gonna save you over the course of my first playthrough I died 42 times but each one felt productive that despite Lamm momentary setback i was always moving forward making the persistence incredibly frustrating but also one of the most addictive games I've ever played. There are only four decks on the ship to explore but gameplay length is not one of my complaints in fact my only complaint about the persistence is that the environments are fairly generic and insanely dark much darker than the well-lit demo from a few months back. I was waiting for some drastic level variety that simply never came each deck looks and feels only mildly different than the one before it. So it's fortunate that everything else the game does makes up for this in spades.

The required DualShock for despite an oddly severe learning curve handles the complex controls admirably. The 3d sound design is absolutely incredible you'll usually hear mutants even in other rooms long before you see them. The music and ambient noises swell at just the right times to build suspense or to help scare you to death. It probably took me about six hours to stop jumping at every single scare but those first six hours were beyond intense.  Sometimes making even just walking from room to room stressful. But as you get better and build up your character you'll acclimate to this space ridden house of horrors gaining the much-needed confidence to engage enemies in some creative combat just be warned this game is extremely scary and just as difficult and if you dare let someone watch you play there's a free downloadable app for your tablet or smartphone that lets a second non VR player invade your game and they can help you or make life miserable. After 17 hours I finally saw at the end of the game it wasn't the good ending and I totally failed the last mission but that's just further incentive to go back keep leveling up and give it another go.

I could go on and on about the persistence all day because there's plenty that I didn't cover including a separate survival mode that I still haven't unlocked. But figuring this game out failing at it and eventually learning from your mistakes is all part of the fun I'd hate to ruin any of that for you. I was expecting the persistence to be really good I just wasn't expecting it to be this good this deep or this addictive is simply put even need to play this game.

I knew Doom Eternal had proven its point when I started taking down Marauders without even breaking a sweat. These terrifying devil horned axe wielders had been life threatening challenges when they were first introduced midway through the game. But a while later I was effortlessly throwing them aside in one-on-one duels. Doom Eternal not only retains the wild high-speed to the brink of death and back again Evan flow of combat that it's 2016 predecessor excelled at. It tweaks the formula to introduce more strategy replayability and ultimately satisfaction to this outstanding 15-plus our first person shooter campaign. Some great games are clever exercises and thoughtful design while others are dumb fun but Doom Eternal is the best of both. Before long you'll be thrown into the meat grinder with dozens of Hell's denizens at once including resurrected doom two favourites not seen in the 2016 reboot. Old folks like me remember the pain elemental a semi dangerous lost soul spewing cousin of the kakko demon and the demon buffing pyro maniacal arch-vile which as in 1994 is one of the biggest threats you have to beat down and when you've got all those monsters gunning for you Doom Eternal does something unexpected.

It starts to get intellectual in the midst of its carnage to be effective you need to start to read the defence like a quarterback at the line of scrimmage and timing is everything on a basic level it's the same game plan as doomed 2016 and that you can largely ignore the puissant zombies soldiers and imps at the start of a big fight you might need to use them to farm for resources later but in eternal many heavy hitting demons like the mang Cubist's or kakko demons have weak points you can exploit. This opens up a new level of finesse that rewards precision in the heat of battle rather than spraying everything with as much death as possible meanwhile any foe can be torched with the new flame belch suit accessory causing them to sweat armor shards to help you get ready for the next fight or save your bacon in the current one. Need ammo? If you can't find enough around the battlefield the chainsaw isn't just to kill anything get-out-of-jail-free card.

It is once again one of the most fun weapons to use that also happens to be an ammo generator. It can put you back in the game after you've run dry and what otherwise be all but helpless. Collectively these tweaks and additions are a refinement of the fantastic system that the previous dooms struck gold with but they go a long way toward making the combat feel deeper and more multiple choice. The best new weapon again echoing 1994s  Doom 2 is the super shotgun, a double-barrelled duck gun with a meat hook attachment that in a fittingly dumi twist brings you to the target for an in-your-face blast rather than the other way around. That allows for maximum damage from the short-range sawed offs twin shell blasts and also gives you even greater mobility in all there are enough new options that it seems like no two Slayers will slay the exact same way and that makes for some welcomed water cooler talk with friends as well as genuine replayability.

Speaking of Secrets and traditional doom fashioned eternal is packed with them. Some tease you in plain sight and challenge you to reach them while others are tucked cleverly out of the way. Most require your best double jumping air dashing platforming skills in order to reach their location. Rewards range from upgrade points that you get from playing to collectible Funko pop like toys of each types of monster and the search for them becomes something of a reward in and of itself because of how much effort and fun it is to solve each secrets little puzzle not to mention how they serve as a refreshing cooldown period after you finish off another big combat bowl. Between missions you'll return to the fortress of doom an orbital mancave that's far too big and empty for what it actually offers which isn't much aside from a literal mancave.

But it does let you sample classic in software soundtracks from the past 25 years and I recommend that you do and yes like its predecessor there's an unexpected amount of actually respectable plot underneath all the next snapping eyeball popping madness. Doom Eternal story is surprisingly fleshed out though unfortunately you have to read most of it in menu based text logs instead of the dramatic scenery chewing performance it deserves. I was happy to follow along at first but by the latter third of my quest to save earth and all of mankind I've grown weary of reading log after log and just thirsted for more action.  Add in slayer gates and secret timed encounters hidden in each level that serve up one-off rounds of extra challenge and extra reward and simply put Doom Eternal has one of the best and interesting first-person-shooter campaigns I've played in years.

As it is the second game of its kind it lost some of its originality but none of the joy of its intense and raging combat style. This magnificent refinement of the already outstanding Doom 2016 reboot makes you an unspoken deal. If you can keep up with it, it will keep up with you. It continually teaches you how to play faster smarter and more efficiently with lots of options at every step of the way to tailor fights to your preferred slaying style and it's an absolute blast along the way
